Traspas y Torijano
Hanging on my lounge wall is this photo print I picked up a few years ago on the walk down the hill in Eivissa old town, at one of those wonderfully mysterious tiny boutique galleries seemingly embedded into the city walls.
his 1976 photo of the two dancers always intrigued me so I went and did some homework. Traspas y Torijano are artists and artesans Jesús García and Isabel Delgado. Although born respectively in Madrid and Salamanca, they've been on the island nearly 50 years, and have become much-loved local members of the D’Alt Vila community, where they've been based for more than three decades. They became so popular tourists would turn up and take photos and even piss in their well (!) in a part of town notoriously lacking in public conveniences. Originally hairdressers, they moved to the island in search of a bohemian new life in the 70s, living in a truck with two wheels next to Es Codolar beach before starting a family. They now put on a nativity scene each winter and are also take part in Ibiza's annual medieval celebrations when they lay on a gloriously eccentric banquet for 40 people! They've basically seen it all. You can also follow them HERE
